PURPOSE:  To communicate to the reader the sources that you have used for your report.
ü  List books, magazines, encyclopedias, websites, electronic media, etc.
ü  Every time you write a fact down, its source should be noted.
ü  Pay special attention to punctuation.
ü  Entries should be double spaced – within and between bibliographies.
ü  Indent second line and thereafter.
ü  Alphabetize accordingly:
     ·  List your sources in alphabetical order by the author’s last name

·  If no author, alphabetize by the first major word of the title (ignoring A,
An, The).  For example, “The Middle Ages” would be alphabetized
              under M rather than T.
ü  Number a bibliography page in sequence with your report.  If your report     is eight pages long, the Bibliography page should be page 9.

Please visit the Twin Peaks library web site, click on bibliography on the left side for more complete information. It probably would be helpful to print out a hard copy to ensure doing it correctly.

Both seventh and eighth graders will be writing a research paper, following MLA format.  The requirements for the MLA bibliography are all listed here but the formatting for the paper is available at the Twin Peaks Library website.  Follow the link and scroll down to the end of section 4.  Then click on MLA format.

MLA Format at a glance

·         Type paper on a computer using 8 ½ x 11-inch paper.

·         Double-space and use a legible font such as Times New Roman or Arial. The font should be 12 point.

·         Leave only one space after periods or other punctuation.

·         Set the margins on the paper to 1 inch on all sides.

·         Indent the first line of paragraphs to one-half inch from the left margin. Use the tab key rather than spacing five times.

Formatting the first page:

·         Do not make a title page.

·         In the upper left hand corner of the first page, list your name, your instructor’s name, the course and period, and the date.

·         Double space again and center the title. Do not underline, italicize, or place your title in quotation marks

·         Do not write the title in all capital letters.

·         Double space between the title and the first line of the text.

·         Create a header in the upper right-hand corner that includes your last name followed by a space with a page number; number all pages consecutively with Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3, 4, etc.), one-half inch from the top and flush with the right margin.
